This was a landscape design project that was really done in two phases. First was the rear garden. The owner, Dr. Suttner, wanted a new pool as well as some areas for small children to play. We designed the pool with safety features and an automatic cover. There was existing brick on the porches, so we located matching colors and veneered the decking with that brick.
Several fountains and curved back walls with brick and stucco accents create a striking outdoor area that has an old classic feel with all the modern conveniences. Even the trampoline was installed in a subterranean vault so the kids would bounce out at ground level. Careful attention was given to plantings that would grow up to screen surrounding properties. All hardscape, lighting, and plantings were completed by us in a timely and detailed manner.
The front garden was designed and installed several years later after a major remodel. This included a new brick drive, arbors, walls, entries, wrought iron fencing and plantings. The home is in an old part of La Jolla, so we tried to give it an older feel of a large craftsman with an updated spin.
The main entry reflects the same arch that is overhead in the front entrance. The owners wanted something that softened their tall home that was fairly near the street. The front arbor seems to really provide a great solution.
It was a real privilege to work for a client like this and a special job that combined the style of the first phase and then years later that same style again.
