Privacy and Interest

This was a project that started with a ground up remodel of an old cottage that sits on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Bird Rock (South La Jolla). The owners, Don and Alice Fehrenbach, wanted to create privacy and interest in the front of the home.

Some of the original brick planters were left in place, so we worked off them in style and texture. Flagstone and used brick were mixed in patterns providing an old world cottage charm with an updated feel. There were art objects to locate and drives and walks to consider.

Because of the proximity to the ocean, security was an issue as well as careful plant selections that can hold up to the salt spray environment. Even the narrow side garden became a little meditation spot with a cute park bench and surrounding brick planters.

The rear patios were right on the ocean cliffs. We designed raised planters so railing or fences wouldn’t have to be used that could interrupt the view. Stone and used brick veneers were used to match the front courtyards.
