When we first evaluated this Coronado property, the backyard lacked a defined purpose and did not take full advantage of the home’s coastal setting. The homeowners wanted an outdoor living room that felt intentional and comfortable while standing up to coastal conditions like wind, sun exposure, and cooler evenings. Our challenge was to design a space that functioned year-round, felt connected to the home’s architecture, and encouraged gathering without overwhelming the site.
Our solution was a design centered around a custom outdoor fireplace that anchors the space and provides warmth and structure. We carefully oriented seating to create a protected and inviting gathering area, then layered plantings, natural materials, and subtle lighting to soften the space. The finished backyard living space feels like a true extension of the home and offers a refined yet relaxed setting for entertaining and everyday enjoyment.
