This Rancho Santa Fe property required a thoughtful hardscape expansion rather than a full redesign, with the primary challenge centered on functionality. A narrow, winding driveway made parking and vehicle circulation difficult, while a small bordering hillside limited expansion without structural support. The goal was to improve access and usability without overpowering the existing landscape or disrupting the established aesthetic of the home and backyard, which already featured a large patio and pool area.
We addressed these challenges by reworking the driveway into a more navigable layout, including a circular front drive and a widened side driveway supported by a new retaining wall. Replanting the previously barren hillside and refreshing existing planters with waterwise, climate-appropriate plantings softened the new hardscape and tied the front and back yards together. The result is a more functional, cohesive landscape that enhances daily use while maintaining a refined, understated design. Layered plantings were added to soften the hardscape and bring balance to the design, resulting in an outdoor environment that feels connected, functional, and timeless.
