In this La Jolla landscape redesign, the property’s elevation changes created a fragmented outdoor space that felt disconnected. The raised lap pool and lower patio areas lacked a clear transition, and the grade shifts limited how the homeowners could comfortably gather and move through the yard. Our challenge was to resolve the changes in elevation while preserving a refined coastal aesthetic and improving functionality.
Our solution was to introduce formal brick patios and carefully proportioned steps that create a natural flow from the raised pool down to a sunken deck patio. We designed the pool wall to serve a dual purpose, providing structure while also offering additional seating for entertaining. By using natural materials, clean lines, and balanced plantings, we unified the multiple levels into a cohesive outdoor environment that feels intentional and relaxed.
