When we first evaluated this Muirlands property, the homeowners wanted to expand their outdoor living space without interrupting the home’s historic character or sacrificing unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean. Creating a comfortable gathering area at grade would have disrupted the view corridor, so the design needed a thoughtful solution that balanced architecture, views, and livability.
By lowering the patio, we created a sunken outdoor living room that feels intimate while preserving sightlines to the ocean. The space includes a bar, BBQ, and curved seating around a fire feature, all framed by heavy timber beams resting on restored brick columns that echo the home’s original details. Drought tolerant plantings and refined stonework complete this La Jolla landscape redesign and create a seamless extension of the home. Learn more in The La Jolla Seaside Landscape Makeover.
