The primary challenge of this Rancho Santa Fe property was transforming a large, sloping landscape into a secluded garden that felt immersive, while still remaining functional and cohesive. The homeowner envisioned long, winding walkways that concealed views and revealed destinations only at key moments. Achieving this sense of discovery required careful management of elevation changes, circulation, and sightlines, as well as dense planting that created privacy without overwhelming the space.
We addressed this by designing the landscape that weaves brick and flagstone together in a flowing pattern that leads the eye naturally through the property. These pathways guide visitors toward the pool and into a series of Mediterranean inspired garden spaces layered with texture and thoughtful plant selections. The banding also helps create a sense of separated rooms within the continuous space. The materials and layout complement the home’s architecture and create a timeless, welcoming garden experience.
