Torrey Pines Landscape Company Wins First Place In The 2024 CLCA Maintenance Award Category!
It’s that time of year again where the CLCA announces the annual Beautification Awards. Last year, we announced that Torrey Pines was awarded the 2024 CLCA Design & Build Outstanding Achievement Award, Presidential Award, and first place in Residential Maintenance.
The 2024 CLCA awards have finally been announced, and once again, the hard work of the Torrey Pines crew has paid off! The association recognized the La Jolla Contemporary – Maintenance and Coronado Tropical Contemporary – Design/ Build projects, which won first place in the Residential Maintenance and Design/Build categories.
The California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) is a statewide non-profit trade organization comprising state-licensed landscape and landscape-related limited specialty contractors. The organization’s 2,500-strong membership roster also includes suppliers, landscape architects, educators, public officials, and students.
The San Diego chapter of the CLCA’s annual Beautification Awards showcases the impressive work of its members, representing some of the best and brightest landscaping contractors in the world. 18 award categories recognize individual elements of a design-build project, including lighting and water efficiency, and overall recognition of a project’s scope and quality.
The Residential Maintenance Award category recognizes the work put into maintaining a property’s landscape on any single-family residential property. This includes replanting seasonal flowers, pruning and shaping specialty flora, and maintaining soil health and irrigation systems.
TPLC’s La Jolla Contemporary project, which won the award, featured a hillside landscape redesigned to include a tri-level system of terraces maintenance activities for the project include lawn maintenance, shrub pruning, ensuring uniform growth in the property’s planters, and keeping the wide variety of flora thriving through regular fertilizations and specialized watering schedules.
The Design & Build Award category recognizes the contractors’ skill in designing and constructing an entirely new landscape. Entrants submit their design plans and photos of the project, and judges select the most creative designs with the best implementation.
The Coronado Tropical Contemporary – Design & Build project that won the category redesigned the property’s three primary outdoor spaces: the front yard, courtyard, pool area, side yards and a second-floor balcony. The front yard comprised a large lawn replaced by a sprawling planter featuring a playful arrangement of boulders and crawling groundcover, as well as a mass planting of lush grasses that beckoned visitors into an inner courtyard entryway. This soft contemporary planting plan sets this property apart from the rest of the front landscaping on Coronado, which typically are more traditional, formal or cottage style.
The pool area was designed to incorporate a tropical aesthetic that matched the home’s design while giving a lush backdrop to the indoor-outdoor living spaces. The planting plan consists of low water tropical plants that give this landscape a Balinese feel. The plant palette was selected to create a calming, Zen environment.
To preserve the setting’s lush, tropical aesthetic, the Torrey Pines maintenance crew oversees the irrigation and fertilization of these plants to keep them in good health. This consistent care ensures that the planter’s contents complement the clean lines that were incorporated into the design of the indoor-outdoor space.
To soften and add life to the second-story balcony, potted plants were installed with irrigation and drainage. Shade loving nandina and topiary olive shrubs underplanted with senecio ground cover. This space overlooks the pool area and the plants were selected to complement the plants in that area.
