Tropical Del Mar Backyard

The main challenge of this Del Mar backyard was translating the homeowner’s love of Hawai‘i into a cohesive tropical retreat that felt natural within a Southern California coastal setting. The sloping terrain toward the waterfront and outdated elements made the space feel underutilized and disconnected. The design needed to balance bold, island-inspired elements with materials and plantings that would feel grounded, functional, and appropriate for the site’s climate and views.

We transformed the space through a landscape design centered on natural materials and immersive outdoor living. An outdoor kitchen construction with a large barbecue counter and bar seating anchors the yard, while a custom spa and raised fire pit create inviting areas to gather. Sand finished concrete, carefully placed stone, and matching boulders frame a focal point water feature that adds movement and sound.
